So I still needed a new mouse (my wife's mouse was too large to be portable). A product search through Amazon brought the Logitech Anywhere MX to my attention. The reviews looked good, and it had all the features I wanted, including the side buttons, so I ordered it. I've been very happy with it. Although it doesn't fold or bend, it's small enough to toss into a computer bag, and yet still large enough to be comfortable in my large hands. Quite an engineering feat, that -- congratulations to Logitech. The side buttons are perfectly placed for easy thumb access if you're right handed, as I am. It has a scroll wheel between the left and right mouse buttons that is also easy to reach, and can be set for scrolling a line at a time, click-click, or a continuous smooth scroll (my preference). It also tilts left and right for horizontal scrolling, and is much faster at that than any other mouse I've used.
It's called an "Anywhere" mouse because it can work on surfaces where ordinary optical mice don't, such as clear glass (but not mirrors). It accomplishes this by using a second laser at an angle to illuminate the surface where the main laser points. That doesn't matter at home, but will be useful when I'm traveling and staying in a hotel room with a glass-top desk.
The USB transceiver dongle protrudes from the computer case only about 1/3 inch. I think it will be possible just to leave it in when I put the computer in a bag to travel. If not, there's a storage spot for it inside the mouse, but you have to remove the battery cover to get at it.
The one feature that I think could be improved is the on/off mechanism. A small plastic plate on the bottom slides forward to turn the mouse off and also to cover the laser ports. You really should turn it off to help preserve battery life, as it remains operative for quite a while after the last use before shutting itself off. I've learned to remember to do it most of the time now, but it's a little bit of a nuisance every time. But I didn't consider this a significant enough flaw to dock it a full star.
I haven't had it long enough to comment on battery life or durability. It uses two AA batteries (included), and the instructions say it can work on just one, which I haven't tried but some of the reviewers confirmed. I'm still using the original batteries that came with the mouse.
The main drawback for this mouse was the price. It's one of the most expensive on the market, at $80 MSRP. But I was able to get it from Amazon for under $60, and I considered it well worth the cost. Now I see Amazon is selling it for $40, so it's an even better buy. Highly recommended.
I purchased this mouse over a year ago, prior to starting a new job with 80%+ travel. As a result of the travel (every week) this mouse has taken a beating, and you can't even tell!
Pros:
It comes with a lovely case, which is felt lined, and keeps the mouse looking sharp
It is weighted just about perfectly for my use
It works EVERYWHERE, including from across the room
The scroll lock is very useful
My computers pick it up very quickly when I plug in the dongle
It stores the (tiny) receiver inside the body
It can run on only one battery if needed
Cons:
It does use batteries a bit faster than I would like. I use the 2450mAH Energizer rechargeable batteries
If you have big hands like me, it will take some getting used to (but you WILL get used to it)
One of the most telling things about this mouse, is that after a full year of heavy use - it travels and is used every single day - even the writing on it has not worn off at all. To me, that sums up the quality of build. I have used it multiple times from across the room to move to the next Netflix show, and I have tested it on glass...it works.
It works everywhere, walking back to your desk with laptop in hand? Use it on your leg, at a big glass table? Use it there, it works everywhere, and has a great range.
As I said, it works great, and I cannot recommend this enough - as a testament, I have noticed countless co-workers (traveling consultants) who also use this same exact mouse...it's that good. It is very compact for travel, but large enough that you don't get a cramp from using it, and the receiver can remain in the laptop, even as you move through airport security.
If you do use it for travel, however, make sure you have some extra batteries. You get a warning on your screen, but there is no performance indicators like other mouses. Other wireless mouses I have used, you will notice that it misses clicks, or will move in choppy motions. With the MX Anywhere, when it's dead, it's dead. It just stops - I like that it uses the juice to the last drop, but again, make sure you have at least one spare AA battery (and use rechargeable, it's better for the environment, and you wallet)
I bought this at $80, and would do so again if I had to (in fact, I may pick up a spare just in case it ever craps out)
I recently had a slide show presentation and discovered the "wheel" can be used to go forward or backwards during the presentation. I was 15 feet from the laptop receiver and feel that it is a sufficient distance. The mouse is a bit large to hold in ones hands comfortable like a regular slide changer, but it does work rather well if placed on a solid surface. Somewhat awkward finding the "next" button but it works saving you the cost of purchasing a "real" slide changing device or being next to the laptop.
Comes with a draw-string cloth case and easily fits into my laptop carrying case. Seems sturdy enough to take a little bit of banging around. It will operate on one AA battery but there is space for 2 of them.
The response is outstanding and tracking is the same. My wife uses it on the bed and it tracks just fine on the blanket. It is well made.
My single complaint is that it costs way too much. Because of that I would subtract one star. I do have other Logitech wireless desktop products which I like very much. (Feb 2013 still working great. no visible wear and tear.)
