The Kensington WiFi Finder Plus is a solid performer and does what I needed it for. I've never tried the built in BlueTooth Finder, but that's simply because I've never used any BlueTooth devices.

Regardless, the WiFi Finder is not going to give you as powerful signal as your wireless device. If you get one LED to light up on this keychain, it can equal about 3-4 bars. 2 LEDs for me equates to a full 5 bars on my laptop typically. This is not foolproof, however, as at times it will show no signal at all given its lack of power, when it is quite possible to connect.

Basically, it is a good product if you're looking to see if you're in or in close proximity to a hotspot, but not necessarily for if you're driving or walking past somewhere and wish to know if you'll have wireless connectivity inside. Buy it for specific uses but don't expect it to show signals like your laptop will.

This is probably the most useless piece of equipment I've ever purchased. (You should hear me when I'm not trying to be nice)

Couple of examples. One of my neighbors has a wireless network running that I can connect to, with my laptop, from 'good' to 'very low'. Usually low. The Kensington WiFi Finder doesn't find it. There's a coffee shop I go to that I connect to from 'Excellent' to 'Very Good'. It can't even find that one when I'm sitting in the coffee shop.

The only time it was able to locate a wireless network was when I was walking across a college campus. Duh! And the signal registered as 'very low'.

I don't know what you'd use this for, but finding wireless networks isn't one of them.

The Wifi Finder Plus is not very sensitive. It does work, but my notebook computer can connect to many wifi access points that this finder cannot find. So it is pretty much useless. I expected that I would be able to drive down the street and find access points. But not so. If I am within 25 feet or so of an access point it usually shows up with a very weak signal. But not always.

The wifi detector part of this unit works without issue and I guess that is its main function however, the bluetooth detector does not work AT ALL!! I have placed a bluetooth enabled transmitting phone next to the device and it was not detected.

My other major problem was with the clasp. I had the unit attached to a laptop bag and right in the middle of an airport the clasp broke. Luckily some nice person informed me and I was able to pick up the unit.

My suggestion, go with another device.

i have used this product on my home network . my home network works fine up to about 100ft. the wifi dectector has only dectected my network while in the same room as the router. there it is strong. when i get out of a direct line of site it stops detecting my network. also have not been able to detect any blue tooth connections when i am using them. the little flashlight works fine. i took it in my car for a while and tried it in several locations that i thought there should be a signal. none was dectected.

This is a great device for internet connection by wifi. It has really increased the speed of my laptop when in use.

Problem 1. The finder states it should find BlueTooth, but even if I hold it next to my Treo 650 with Blue Tooth enabled no light shows. Problem 2. My laptop detects wireless networks with strong signals, the Kensington product did not find whatso ever. I do not recommend this product at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent results
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2009
I'd hoped to use this to place laptops in a slightly better location, but the reading results are so inconsistent that it's not been useful. Pressing the button makes the LEDs light in an up-and-down pattern then after a couple of seconds you get red, 2, 3, 4 or 5 lit. If you hold the button then it is supposed to continuously show the wifi strength which would be good if it was more consistent. There's also a little orange torch on the back.

I have now had two of these devices. The first was dead on arrival and was replaced. The second is now just over a year old and has seen use only about half a dozen times and has just died. Look elsewhere for something reliable.
